Lancia's brief Formula 1 programme produced the revolutionary D50, one of the most technically advanced cars of its era with pannier fuel tanks acting as structural elements. Following Alberto Ascari's death in 1955 and severe financial pressure, Lancia donated their cars and designs to Ferrari.
